Getting Started with Chatzilla
REQUIREMENTS
- You MUST have Mozilla Firefox in order to use Chatzilla. Go download it here: http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/new/
INSTALLING CHATZILLA
- After you download and install Firefox. Go to Google.
- Type “Firefox Chatzilla Add-On” in the search box. Then click on the first link.

- Click on the “Add to Firefox” button.

- Then click on the “Install Now” button.

- When it is done installing, click on the “Restart Firefox” button.

- After Firefox is restarted and the Add-On window shows it is installed, close the Add-On window.

OPENING CHATZILLA
CHANGING NICKNAME
- Change to the nickname you want by left clicking on the arrow by where you type.

- Then click on the Change Nickname.

- Then write the name you want to have in the prompt box and push the “OK” button.

JOINING A SERVER
- Then in the writing space next to your nick, type this: /server irc.[name of server].[com/net/org/etc] Then you press enter.
For example, I want to go to irchighway, I would have to type this: /server irc.irchighway.net

NICKNAME REGISTRATION/LOGGING IN
- After you join the server, it might show that the nickname is registered. If it is, you need to change the nickname, unless you are the owner.
If you are the owner, type this: /msg NickServ IDENTIFY [YOUR PASSWORD HERE]
If you aren’t, follow the steps to change the nickname. Then repeat as many times as you need.

- If you want to register a nickname, type this: /msg NickServ Register [your password] [your e-mail]
- Then follow the prompts to register.
You can skip registering, if you don’t want to keep that nickname open. This merely protects that nickname from other people using it.
TIPS AND TRIPS TO MANIPULATE
Feel free to skip any of these steps. They just are to make it easier for you, if you want to keep on using ChatZilla and IRC.
To Set Up Preferences
SERVER PREFERENCES
Do not mess with the other tabs or sections, unless you understand what they do.
GENERAL
If anything, I would do the “Rejoin when kicked”.
- On the left-hand side, there is “Global Settings” and underneath there will be the servers. Click on the server.
- Click the “General” tab. Then make sure you check the “Rejoin when kicked”.
- Then you can add a short description and username, if you want. It isn’t really needed.
- Click “Apply”.
APPEARANCE
Not really needed, but oh, well. Really unnecessary, unless you are nick-picky like me. I wouldn’t mess with anything else on this tab.
- Click on the “Appearance” tab.
- Under Timestamps, in the text box that says: [%H:%M]. If you want to see the seconds, type this: [%H:%M:%S]
- Then click on “Apply”.
LISTS
If you registered your nickname, or have a nickname already registered, this is a really good tip. That is, if you don’t want to keep on typing in your password every time you log in.
- Click on the “Lists” tab.
- Under “Auto-Perform”, click on “ADD”.
- Type this in the prompt box: msg NickServ IDENTIFY [YOUR PASSWORD]
- Click OK.
- Click Apply.
- Then Click OK

LISTS
I would do the stalk-words, if you are going to be using IRC for a long time — and actually talking. Stalk words alert you to a topic or when people are talking to you.
- Click on the “Lists” tab.
- Under the “Stalk Words”, click add.
- Type in the prompt box the word you want to be alerted to.
- Push OK.
- Keep on repeating until all the words you want to be alerted to are there.
GLOBAL
If you want to adjust the sound effects or have logs. Logs keep track of what was said in a channel, user chat, etc.
- Click on the “Global” tab.
- Scroll down a little bit.
- Under the “Log These Views”, check the ones you want to have logs for.
- Under the “Sound Events”, add a beep to wherever you want it at.
- Click “Apply”.
- Click “OK”.
Changing the Scheme
- Go to “View”.
- Go to “Color Scheme”.
- Pick the scheme you want.
Adding Time-Stamps
- Go to “View”.
- Click “Show Timestamps”.
Opening At Start-Up
Comes in handy if you are just going to keep on visiting the same network or channels everyday.
NETWORK
- Right click on the server tab. In my case, it will be the irc.irchighway.net tab.
- Click on the “Open This Network at Startup”.
CHANNELS
Read the joining a channel first before you try this one.
- Right click on the channels tab. In my case, it will be the #game tab.
- Click on the “Open This Channel at Startup”.
Closing Tabs
Read the joining a channel first before you try this one. This will only work on the *client* tab.
- Right click on the *client* tab.
- Click on “Close Tab”.
JOINING A CHANNEL
- In the text box, next to where your nickname is, type this: /j #[channel name]
- For example, to join one of my channels, I would type this: /j #game
LEAVING A CHANNEL
WAY 1
- Click on the channel tab of the one you want to leave.
- In the text box, next to where your nickname is, type this: /part
- Then hit enter.
WAY 2
- Click on the channel tab of the one you want to leave.
- Right click on that channel tab.
- Click on “Leave #___”.
DISCONNECTING COMPLETELY
- In any tab, type this: /quit
- This will disconnect you from IRC and close down ChatZilla.
Nicklist Options
WHERE IS THE NICKLIST AND WHAT DOES IT DO?
The nicklist is on the left hand side of ChatZilla, and it lets you know who is on at the time. Also, it also lets you know who is in charge, and other information.
HOW TO CHANGE THE COLORED CIRCLES TO SYMBOLS
- On the nicklist panel, right click.

- When the window shows up, click on the “Show Mode as Symbol”.

- Then the colored circles will change to the symbols.

To go back to the colored circles, just do the same thing. ^^
WHAT DO THE SYMBOLS/COLORS MEAN
| & = Administrator
They have pretty much absolute power in the channel. They can kick and ban anyone with powers lesser than theirs. Also, they can change the channel modes, upgrade anyone to a power level, change the topic, and many other things.
| @ = Operator
They have less powers than the administrator. They can kick and ban anyone, including other operators, but they do not have the ability to kick or ban the administrators. They can upgrade anyone to a power equal or lesser to theirs, change the topic, and change some of the channel modes.
| % = Half Operator
They have less powers than regular operators. They only can kick and ban powers lesser than theirs. Also, they can only change some of the channel modes. They may or may not have the ability to change the topic and/or upgrade anyone to a power equal or lesser to theirs. I’m not to sure if they can. :X For most channels, bots have this setting.
| + = Voice Status
Most channels have people they like or trust set as a voice. They have no special powers to do much of anything on the channel. However, if the administrators ever decided to change their channel mode to moderated, anyone with voice status or above are the only ones who can talk on the channel.
| (BLANK SPOT) = Regular User
They have no special powers at all. And if a channel ever goes to moderated mode, they will be able to join and read the conversation, but they will not be able to talk in it.
Easy Way to Connect to Groups
As far as I know, this technique ONLY works in ChatZilla.
CHATZILLA NOT OPENED
- Go to Baka-Updates.

- Then click on the Scanlators link.

- Scroll down and find the search box. Then type the group you are looking for and hit the go button.

- Then on the search results, find the result that matches what you are looking for, and then you click on the link under the IRC Channel column.

- Then ChatZilla will pop up with the channel and server already loaded for you. Though, please note that if you have any channels/servers to open at start-up, then it will not open up.

CHATZILLA OPENED
- Open Firefox browser, and click on Tools. Then find ChatZilla and click on it.

- Then ChatZilla will open up — along with any servers and channels that you have set up to open at start-up.

- Go back Firefox, and go to Baka-Updates.

Though, unlike opening it without ChatZilla opened, your start-up channels/servers will show up.

Using Triggers
Only very recent releases have triggers that are noted.
- When you join the channel, you’ll see some kind of topic. Read the topic to find the right trigger. Here’s a hint: It starts with an exclamation point and ends with some kind of number.
- In the text box next to your nickname, type the trigger. For this example, it’s this: !majo6

- to (Suzume) xdcc send [number]
<Suzume> ** Sending you pack #[number] (“[name of file].zip”
, which is [size] (resume supported)
[DCC] Got DCC File Transfer offer from “Suzume” ([ip address]) of “[name of file].zip” ([size]) [Accept] [Decline].
You will have to click on Accept.

- Save the file where you want to save it. Then click save.

- A new tab will show up.
